A very interesting concept. I think you’re probably right. This may also be why a customer feels such a sense of happiness and freedom when they finally do switch to the new thing. It’s because they’ve been able to move on from the past. It doesn’t always work out, of course, but there is that initial feeling of excitement and joy around the new thing. Great article. That's a real insight - the relief of finally leaving. What I've noticed is that relief usually signals the identity was assigned, not chosen.
You wear that identity until it no longer fits, and then you realize it was never yours to begin with.
That's where things get interesting. You get to choose a new path, and the identity that comes with it.
